What is Leed?
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a green building rating system created by individuals representing all segments of the building industry who are members of the United States Green Building Council. It is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings, and seeks to establish common standards of measurement, recognize environmental leadership on the building industry, and raise consumer awareness of green building benefits. The program awards points to various aspects of a design project, including paint. With enough points, a project can be LEED Certified.
As green buildings gain momentum in the Philippines, Boysen Paints is showcasing a line of green paints that will help professional architects quality for points in Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED), an internationally accepted benchmark for green building.

How is this done?
In keeping with the company’s commitment to produce safer and more environmentally friendly paint products, all Boysen paint products coming out of its factories, whether water or oil-based, are lead free. Boysen voluntarily phased out its last product that contained lead which is the Red Lead Primer in 2007 and has worked steadily since then to ensure that all of its paint products now and in the future will not use raw materials with lead content such as lead or chromate based pigments or lead driers.
Boysen Paints was also the first Filipino paint manufacturer to introduce mercury free latex paint in the country back in the late 1970s. Since then, Boysen has been an innovator in introducing environmentally friendly paint technologies on a national and regional level. It was the first company in Southeast Asia to introduce a water-based metal primer (Boysen® PrimeguardTM) and a water-based acrylic epoxy paint (Boysen® Acqua EpoxyTM).
In line with new international standards on volatile organic compound (VOC) levels for paint, Boysen has introduced low VOC paints such as Boysen Healthy Home with Microban® antibacterial protection and VirtuosoTM Silk TouchTM, the first paint in the world with both Teflon® non-stick technology and Microban®. In 2009, Boysen introduced KNOxOUTTM, the first air cleaning paint in the world with CristalActiv photocatalytic technology that effectively transforms painted areas into an air purifying surfaces that helps protect people from the ill health effects of air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Pacific Paint (Boysen) Philippines, Inc. and its contract manufacturer Atlantic Coatings, Inc. are the first and only paint companies in the Philippines to be accredited Responsible Care®, the global chemical industry’s environment, health and safety initiative to drive continuous improvement in performance in these areas. Its manufacturing facility is also the only plant in the country that is ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004, and OHSAS 18001:2007 certified; signifying that the plant’s quality, environmental and occupational health and safety management systems are in accordance with the highest international standards.
In the LEED rating system, points can be gained by adhering to certain green building standards. There are several ways to earn points. BOYSEN has many products that are LEED Compliant that can help qualify the entire project being LEED certified.
Things To Know » Applications
KNOxOUT will be of most benefit in areas with high NOx and VOC levels, such as car parks and buildings, houses and infrastructure in urban areas.
Air pollutant levels are usually higher in car parks due to dense vehicle traffic and enclosed spaces. KNOxOUT can make the air healthier for users and employees by decreasing the amount of NOx and VOCs.
According to studies done by the California Air Resources Board, residents near freeways are more susceptible to pollution related illnesses:
Painting buildings, homes and road infrastructure near roads with heavy vehicle traffic can help protect the health of people living, working and playing in these areas.
Polluted Air = Shorter Life
Scientists say human beings can live without food for up to two weeks, without water for up to three or four days but only up to five minutes without air. But while we need air to sustain life, modern life has put a lot of things in the air that are not good for us.
Vehicular traffic and its resulting air pollution is something that most people living in urban areas accept as a fact of life. But while sitting in traffic may test one’s patience and raise blood pressure every now and then, the health effects from exposure to air pollution are much more serious:
Unfortunately, many health effects are seen in people exposed to levels of air pollution that are lower than the current National Ambient Air Quality Standard set by the EPA. In other words, new research shows that levels of air pollution currently considered safe may actually be harmful to some people, including exercising children.
Cleaner Air = Longer Life
Every little bit counts in the fight against air pollution. A study in Europe has found that even very small cuts in pollution can benefit health, and a recent Harvard University study found that people living in cities where air pollution decreased in recent decades saw their life expectancy increase an average of five months as a result of cleaner air.
Air pollution is everybody’s problem.
We have one world and we breathe the same air; therefore we have a common responsibility to improve its quality. Every time we drive a car or ride a bus, we add things to the air that harm people.
But we don’t need to only be a part of the problem, we can be part of the solution.
Painting a wall with KNOxOUT is one of the few ways we have today to take out some of the NOx that we put in the air.
We’ve always painted to protect our houses, with KNOxOUT we can now paint to help protect people from breathing harmful air.
Painting the walls of our house could help protect our family. Painting the walls of our school could help protect our children. Painting the walls around our neighborhood could help protect our community.
If everyone in every community could paint one wall, we could help protect our town, our city, our world.
One person, one wall.
One wall, one world.
Be part of a life-enhancing movement
To protect people and the planet.

According to the World Health Organization, 3 million people are killed worldwide by outdoor air pollution every year. A study by the European Commission estimates that air pollution reduces the life expectancy of an EU citizen by almost nine months. And in a heavily polluted city like Metro Manila, 1 of every 8 premature deaths is caused by air pollution.
NOx are highly reactive gases containing nitrogen and oxygen. It is mostly generated by vehicle emissions, and has serious health and environmental effects. It forms smog (ground level ozone) and small particulate matter that can cause respiratory problems; and also leads to acid rain.
Boysen KNOxOUT contains photocatalytic titanium dioxide, (TiO2), which upon exposure to light, transforms ordinary water vapor to free radicals that break down NOx and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the two components of smog. Harmful NOx gas is converted to nitric acid that is rapidly neutralized by alkaline calcium carbonate particle in the paint, producing harmless quantities of calcium nitrate and negligible amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water.
The air cleaning technology used in KNOxOUT has been proven effective in a series of European trials in Milan, London and Paris. Photocatalytic coatings were applied in a tunnel, a school wall and an indoor carpark and all trials showed significant reductions in NOx.
In the world’s largest air cleaning paint trial, KNOxOUT was tested on a major Metrorail station along the busiest highway in Metro Manila. Early results of the trials show that the KNOxOUT painted on the station and surrounding embankment is estimated to be taking out 1.3 METRIC TONS of NOx per year, making the Metrorail station the biggest air cleaning station in the world!
KNOxOUT has low VOC levels that would meet most international ecolabelling standards for flat water-based paint. But more than that, it has the potential to actually achieve a net VOC reduction in its lifetime – i.e. it will break down more VOCs in the air when dry than the small amounts of VOCs it has when wet.
While most ‘eco-friendly’ paints are focused on low VOC levels to minimize their environmental impact, KNOxOUT establishes a new paradigm for green paints – that of an eco-ACTive paint with Air Cleaning Technology that continuously works to reduce pollution and improve the environment.
KNOxOUT is applied just like any ordinary water based paint – by brush, roller, or airless spray. You’ll need about 4 liters to cover an area of 25-30 square meters with one coat.
KNOxOUT can be applied in white or pastel shades tinted with colorants based on inorganic pigments (yellow oxide, red oxide, black oxide, chrome oxide green, cobalt blue, etc.) Deep shades of KNOxOUT and use of colorants with organic pigments are not recommended.
